Does anyone have a preteen with a mechanical heart valve?
My grandson is 12 and needs a 5th open heart surgery. He was born with truncus arteriosis. His last surgery was 5 years ago. Now, his parents are faced with the decision for either a mechanical aortic valve, which could take some fun out of his life and add trauma of frequent blood sticks, no bicycle riding to his active lifestyle, or 2) repair the aortic valve, which would mean he would need another surgery (#6) when he's a teenager to put a mechanical valve in at that point.
Any advice? He's got a great surgeon and cardiac team at Randall childrens hospital in Portland, Oregon, but we're sick with worry that we might make the wrong decision and carry lifelong regrets.
Thank you so much.

susan harris I’m not qualified to answer your question but…there are lots of videos and info here. And people can tell you the leading surgeons if you want a second opinion. There are some folks like you and I who have put children (my son was 5) thru OHS and valve replacements. And some young adults here too that are so insightful and amazing. What I can tell you is that when you hit those days when you can’t breathe and don’t know where to turn, there are amazing, caring friends here to pick you up!
