So I had a mitral valve replacement by sternotomy on October 11, and then a pacemaker implanted on October 25. The original plan though was for a minimally invasive mitral valve repair, however when the surgeon started he realized the valve was too damaged and had to switch to replacement. I have quite a bit of discomfort in my right breast around my original incision. Is this normal? Some days (like today) my chest feels tight and heavy but other times it’s just a discomfort. I’m still taking Tylenol for pain but I’ve dropped the narcotics. just wondering if the right breast pain is normal. Thanks!

Grace Mason Hi Nana, There are more nerves on your side than over your sternum. Everything I have read says the minimally invasive entry is typically more painful so your pain is probably normal. It's always good to check in with your doc or a nurse to check the incision though.

Susan Lynn Nana - I had a side entry mini-thoracotomy and had discomfort in my right breast even though many of my nerves were frozen during the procedure. I honestly blamed it on the retraction they might have been doing during the procedure. An occasional Tylenol worked for me. As Grace mentioned, if you're concerned, give your surgeon's office a call. There's probably a simple explanation. Best of luck!
