My husband had mitral valve repair, maze procedure for AFib and a double bypass on April 23rd. He spent 2 weeks in the Clveleand Clinic then was home for 5 days then had rapid heart rate that did not go away after 24 hours so now he is back at the clinic since 4 days ago. The drug metopropol has been given, so far his hear rate is in the 140s generally, they want to do an electrocardio conversion in 2 weeks, have to wait because they see a possible vlot situation. So the blood thinners are supposed to dissolve the clot. Anyone have this experience? I am terribly distressed.

Tim Goff yep, right there with him. Mitral repair & MAZE, but no bypass. High heart rate, AFIB and tachychardia post release each of which sent me to the ER a couple of times. Metropolol was useless to me at 200 mg per day so they added Amiodarone which did zip at 400 mg per day so we went up to 600 amio and 200 metro. Finally got a drop in rate so went down to 400 & 150, with a further drop in heart rate I am down to 200 Amio and 100 metro. Still more than I want, but I am now down in the mid 70's instead of 130. They were talking cardioversion if the Amio didn't work, but it did so I am in the clear for now. The drugs really hit me at times so I am hoping to get further reductions next week. There are a host of drugs to get the rate down and you may have to request a change to make some progress. Keep your spirits up ---- he can beat this with proper care.
