Susan Lynn Lynn - You're in good hands at Penn Medicine! Recovery can be a little different for everyone - but, walking after surgery can greatly rebuild your stamina and get you back to life's great adventures. I realize you're having hip replacement, soon, and walking may be more difficult. You don't need to walk miles, just resist the temptation to sit for too long during recovery. I had surgery in the winter in Pennsylvania and I was able to do enough walking inside my house to speed my recovery.

Meredith Bray Hi Lynn, pleased to meet you! The best advice I have for recovery is to stand up as straight as you can when you're up and about, and make sure your head & neck are supported when you're resting. I found using a travel pillow when I was in my recline helped a lot, as well as a few bed pillows stuffed under my arms to relieve the weight on my shoulders. It takes a lot more energy than you think the keep your head and shoulders up when you're resting. The energy you save by using pillows to hold your head up can be redirected to healing! And standing up straight like a model will help restrengthen your core muscles. Recovery ain't easy, and I don't think it will be as difficult as your imagine. You got this!
