Hi Everyone. I am new to this forum but have already seen what a wonderful community this is. I am a 48 year old otherwise healthy male and had a MV repair surgery 2 years ago. Unfortunately, I need to have re-operation (long story) and have been advised by 3 surgeons that a MV replacement is needed (due to the scar tissue and very little natural valve left).
I am having a hard time making a decision regarding surgeons and would love any advice (tentatively scheduled for 2 weeks from now). The 3 options that I am currently considering are: Mayo Clinic in Phoenix (local for me), Duke and Cleveland Clinic (awaiting to hear back from Mt. Sinai). Experience with re-operations is my highest weighted criteria but with the Covid-19 numbers on the rise, I am concerned about the out of state travel.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Susan Lynn Welcome, Kevin. You're definitely looking for a surgeon who is experienced in reoperation of the mitral valve and are sure to find an expert at the facilities you listed. At the time of my procedure, I wasn't required to make a replacement decision, but there are certainly pros and cons to the choices. However, I think I would have selected a bio valve to avoid the blood thinners associated with the mechanical option. It's a very individual decision and, hopefully, our heart warriors will share their opinions with you.
The most important thing is to find the surgeon, team, and facility you trust. They'll make sure you have the best outcome. Good luck with your research! ❤

Barbara Wood Three great options...I guess given these covid Times I would choose the Phx Mayo. I had cancer treatment there 10 years ago, it's a wonderful place. And being close to home just makes everything easier I think...very best wishes as you move forward :).
