Hello I am new to this site. I live in the UK. Can anyone tell me whether they have had a rapid progression of their aortic stenosis from mild to moderate/severe in one year. This speed has frightened me very much as have read on the internet that it is a very poor prognosis if such a rapid increase. Any help would be much appreciated.
When you say the prognosis is bad do you mean not going ahead with surgery? I was told by my cardiac surgeon that without surgery to replace my own severely narrowed aortic valve my life expectancy would be two years. This came as no shock to me. I was born with a bicuspid aortic valve and have known about this eventuality my whole life. The surgery is done all the time, the success rate is very positive (97% or so) and besides, the alternative is pretty grim.
I am 51 years old. My valve remained in the "mildly narrowed state" until a couple of years ago, when it progressed into "mild/moderate" - The severe stage appeared quickly, probably in the last 4-6 months. I have symptoms - fatigue, angina upon exertion, light-headedness, always feeling cold...
There is nothing to fear with the operation. When you read people's stories here you will find they have been given a second chance at life. You, too, have no reason to believe otherwise.
I live in Canada, and am not sure about what the health system in the UK is like, but I am guessing it's very similar to my own. Breathe easy. You will be fine. It's a journey but you will make it.

One thing I can add is that I'm in the UK. My surgery will be done through the Royal Brompton in London. Here in the UK we are blessed with world class hospitals and surgeons. The care I have received so far whether medical or otherwise has been wonderful. As Anita says, it is a journey, a second chance of life; this site has been a God send for me as I know I'm not alone. You are not either.

Mary K I had a rapid progression of symptoms, yes, it is very frightening. I went from paddleboarding with the grandchildren to walking in a walker within two months. Four months out of surgery now, I am up to three miles an hour on the treadmill. Nothing was said at Clevelamd Clinic about a poor prognosis. I feel that my heart is fixed.

W. Carter About 50% of the people here have rapid progression with bad valves. I was working 1 week thinking I was the picture of health, in the hospital the next week gasping for air with doctors telling me I could keel over and die any day from a dissection. On top of a bad leaky valve I also had a 5.7 cm aortic aneurysm, chf, and blood pressure through the roof. Thats how it happens to most people. It is time for an operation to fix the problem, thats all they are trying to tell you.
