Hi there. I have an artificial Mitral Valve and take Warafin daily. I am currently working in a developing country where there is lot of Dengue fever . Obviously I do my best not to get bitten by mosquitos carrying this virus - but should I be unfortunate enough to contract it, would if be dangerous to continue taking warafin - as it is a hemorrhagic disease? Anyone had any experience with this?

if you are living and working in a danger area , you should see your doc at once if you have symptoms like fever and muscle aches. The disease can cause a drop in platelets, so your Coumadin may be changed and INR will be monitored closely .It can be a dangerous disease, but if caught early and managed well, you can recover.

Jeanette Daysh Thanks for that. I have my own testing machine for my INR as there is nowhere here that can test for it - so I can monitor my levels easily, and yes, I would not be brave if I started to suspect that I may have contracted dengue, and would very quickly be seeking medical help...

Marie Myers I had dozens and dozens of retinal migraines (auras) in the weeks following my surgery for AVR in March. I rarely have them now.I have heard the same story from many patients on this site. I asked an ophamologist about it, but he had no explanation for this phenomenon Maybe the stress of surgery or bypass?

Gerald Poulton Hi Jeanette, I was luckier than you, after an aortic valce replacement, I went from getting constant migranes with the aura and often multiples in a day to almost none, maybe one or two a month. They do say that a side effect of OHS is vision problems but not to get your eyes tested till at least three months as it often reverses with time. So obviously it is another one of those pesky side effects so hang in there and hope for the best, I hope that this helps 👍

Catie B I really hope yours ease. I'm more than a year past valve surgery and still have visual disturbances. They can find neither neurological nor ophthalmological reasons. This morning for about three minutes nearly the entire field of vision in my right eye was obscured. I'm sooo grateful, it comes back in minutes.
Rita Savelis Yes. Had some of those. And my eyesight in general went way down. Coincidence? Or just age...?
Marie Myers Good point, Rita. I have never been this old before...
Lisa Hunley I'm 2 weeks post op Mitral Valve repair and I'm having the same issue.

Rose Madura My eye doctor said that my worsening eyesight was due to the amiodarone. He sees it all the time. Another reason for using it short term. I from time to time have the little auras as well - but I've had them all my life.

Sophia Ridley Yes, that’s really common. Mine aura migraines are connected to low blood pressure so keep well hydrated to keep BP normal (beta blockers push it lower). My eyesight is worse post op, but then again it’s probably age!

Pat Bluemel I suffered ocular migraines with aura all my life, and post op had some weird vision stuff and two really big migraines. After that - nothing. For three years now (knock on wood). I tell everyone I have a cure for their migraines now if they really want to go for it;-). "Just have open heart surgery it all goes away!"
Rita Savelis Alas, my migraines (that I had before OHS) never went away. You're lucky, Pat!
