Christine Oliva I am life long type 1 diabetic and I made it through Aortic Valve Replacement with basically no complications. It is very important that he watches his diet now and follow all instructions and when he leaves surgery make sure they are checking his blood every 2-3 hours. My husband stood guard over me the first three days and made sure they did it even when they told him it was not necessary. When my blood sugar starting going over 300 he was on the phone calling my endo doctor, my surgeon and anyone who would listen. Guess what it helped. The good news when I got home my blood sugar returned to more normal and my increased walking has made me lose weight and keep my sugar under much better control, but I know I got to go 10/10 if I really do want to survive. It can be done, believe it, do it and you will accomplish it. Blessings to you both. 7 month post AVR and back to working fulltime and going to school at night.

Jean Raber This sounds so difficult. I am sorry you have to go through it. If it were me, I would be asking his doctor how the surgery will improve his quality of life or reduce any of these other problems. You might ask about TAVR, which is much less invasive and has a quicker recovery. God bless you.
