Hello. I joined just recently. Following my Doctor hearing a heart murmur, An echocardiogram picked up the fact that I have moderate mitral calcification. I am 66 years old, in good shape with no symptoms. I have had a 48hour holter and will be seeing my cardiologist for the first time on August 14. I have been treated for high blood pressure but it is under control. I am scared and depressed. I have no idea what this is about though my GP felt confidant that an initial drug regimen would be considered. I cannot help going to some pretty dark places one of course being Dr. google! and need some help understanding what all this means. Will answer any questions you have. Please respond soon. I haven’t been sleeping and need to get some understanding. Thank you.

Thomas Brusstar Moderate calcification doesn’t sound too advanced yet. I’m 54 and didn’t have calcification the mitral valve, but “severe” regurgitation as a result of some torn chords and a part of the valve that was flapping loose. My point is that as bad as mine was, they fixed it totally. Today, 3 weeks post surgery, I have no leakage. So with words like “moderate” for your calcification, I wouldn’t even assume surgery is needed now (it sounds like that was your doctor’s first guess), but the cardiologist will refer you to a surgeon if he thinks you’re getting there. You’ll have every chance to learn from the docs, so try to relax. This site is a great educational start.

Mark Wilbur Bernie, you came to the right place! Tons of information and first hand experiences here from people who have gone -- and are going -- through what you are. I have gone from fear to confidence as the result of being here, accessing the resources and "listening" to what others have to say. I think you will do the same. Welcome to the community.

Rita Savelis Google is not always helpful, alas Moderate mitral calcification is a condition that needs to be watched but can stay at a moderate level for a long time. It sounds like your doctor has prescribed all the right tests, and if he is confident that meds are all that you probably need now, I'd try to have confidence in him. When you see your cardiologist he will answer all the questions you have. Know that what you are feeling is what most feel when they first find out something may be wrong with their valves. I was watched for many years after my valves first showed some calcification. Surgery came much later. Take care.

LINDA ROBERTS I regret all the time I worried over my valve, instead of waiting until my condition was severe. You could stay at moderate stenosis for quite awhile, so try not to worry for you may have years before surgery.
