Thirty years ago, I had open heart surgery for a mechanical mitral valve implant. I am healthy, For the past 4 years, however, I experienced afib and heart palpitations, where her heart seems to pause momentarily, causing lightheadedness and discomfort that’s landed her in hospital many times with nothing major found by doctors. Also, what are the risks of such surgery at my age 58.What other questions should she be asking the doctor? Unfortunately, in today’s society you have to take your health into your own hands.

Ann T Hello. Just a thought. Have you had your Iron levels checked recently? I also have a mechanical valve and am on coumadin. I have also been having some issues with my iron levels being low. I suspect it is from the Coumadin. I think I seem to notice some palpitations and pauses when my iron levels are lower. I would be interested to hear if you have had any similar experiences. Hang in there, I hope you figure things out soon!

Richard Munson Wow, 30 years is great. You must have a cardiologist i would think, if not, get one. I believe in todays society as well as yesterdays, taking your health care in your own hands is and always has been the way to go. To just visit a doctor and nod your head the way my parents did will not produce the best results. I bring a list of questions when i go and most doctors appreciate that. The ones that don’t will not last long with me.
