Rose Madura Hi Alison. I had surgery over six years ago but do remember those days. I had many complications and one was the pleural effusion. They did a procedure that drained the fluid and I felt so much better. I believe they drained about a 1/2 liter. Hopefully your husband will feel better soon. They may also give him a diuretic. Please keep us posted.

Rita Savelis Pleural effusion is common after heart surgery. I had it 4 times in hospital following my surgery. The fluid was drained with a small needle in my back. The procedure was easy and painless and gave much release as having fluid in your lung lining can make you exhausted and short of breath. Many patients are given diuretic pills (that make you pee) or diuretic IV to help drain the excess fluid from the body - including the pleura. My pleural effusions came back a few years after surgery but were drained again and I occasionally take diuretics. I'm sorry that Bob has to go through this. Unfortunately heart valve surgery can have various unexpected side effects which are "normal" even if they don't always mention them before surgery - some patients have more than others. It can take months to feel better. I've been there and so feel for you and Bob.

Deb Yednak Hi Alison I too had pleural effusion after I got home and they treated it with diuretic. Not uncommon. There are quite a few glitches that I had after the surgery that were not mentioned ahead. I had no use of the last 3 fingers on my left hand for about 7 months before the feeling came back, and still off and on loose the feeling. Also had some breathing issues - but all things considered those little glitches, are nothing to me compared to being alive for another 10-15 years! Hang in there.
