About Me (In My Own Words)
I collapsed on March 15, 1999 in Moses Lake WA. I was taken to Samaritan hospital in Moses Lake, to be diagnosed. 3 days later, March 18, they realized I had suffered an Aortic disssection. I was airlifted to Deaconess hospital in Spokane WA for emergency surgery. My heart valve was replaced with a ST Jude valve, and the ascending aorta was wrapped in a velour Graft. My dissection included the Carotid arteries as well as the descending aorta all the way to my feet. Chest pains, severe, happened several times a year for the first few years, but eventually faded away. My carotid arteries are checked every year with a CT scan every couple years. My latest report shows moderate Stenosis of the St Jude valve. Considering in 1999 the doctors gave me 5 years, and I have made it more than 20, I know that now I have to accept problems of stenosis with the valve, but we will see how that works out. Thank you for letting me tell my story. Walter Olmstead
