About Me (In My Own Words)
My dad had heart valve replacement (I don't have the specifics right in front of me) on December 29. He was in the ICU until January 6, then in the cardio unit until yesterday, January 9. He is now at a rehab facility and will be for a bit. He is 88 years old and this was his first major surgery. The surgery went well, but recovery is going slow. Prior to surgery he had struggles with his legs and feet and wasn't able to walk much at all. He could walk with a walker maybe 10 feet or so. This complicated his recovery as he wasn't able to walk much and still hasn't walked much. A lot of the providers for him have thought about Parkinson's but no one has done anything about it. While in the ICU he was extremely loopy and emotional, and it was very difficult visiting with him when I am used to a strong confident man. He is still a bit confused and we're not sure if it is still residual from surgery or just his age. He is also still not able to walk much but the physical therapy at rehab will hopefully help. The current difficulty is that the nurses are unable to wake him up from sleeping. This is disturbing to me, but I've read here that this may be common after surgery. I guess it scares me because he is not under constant supervision at the rehab place and what if something happens and the nurses don't get to him soon enough and find him sleeping, but really he has passed away. I think that is what is scaring me right now.
