About Me (In My Own Words)
For several years I had been experiencing shortness of breath that made exercise difficult. I had a slightly irregular heartbeat and had annual echocardiograms. In February 2018, my echo showed I had moderate aortic stenosis. During the last week in March and the first week of April, I had to visit the ER at Sequoia Hospital here in Redwood City, CA due to fainting. On the second visit in March another echo was taken and my aortic stenosis had become severe and required a valve replacement. My cardiologist (Donald St. Claire, M.D.) referred me to Luis Castro, M.D. I am so grateful for that referral. Dr. Castro is a highly respected and well-known cardiothoracic surgeon. He is very personable and positive. His team and he are like a family and make patients feel like they are part of the family too. Open heart surgery can be daunting; however Dr. Castro and his team made me quite at ease and desirous for the operation. I was in Sequoia Hospital where Dr. Castro is the Director of Cardiology. I was in the ICU for less than a day and then spent another 5 days in the hospital to heal and start physical and occupational therapy. In all it was a very pleasant experience. Other than the day following surgery, I did not suffer much pain.
