About Me (In My Own Words)
Sarah was born with a primum ASD and mitral valve leak, which was fixed at 9 months by open heart surgery at Tx Children's Hospital by Dr. Charles Fraser. At her one year check-up, a subaortic membrane was found below her aortic valve which was watched and resected (another open-heart surgery..same doctor/hospital) at age 4.5. At that time, another stitch was added to the mitral valve leaflet to tighten that leak up. Almost immediately, the growth (subaortic membrane) came back and at age 9.5, was resected again by open heart surgery by Dr. Fraser at Tx Children's. Sarah is doing fine now (no restrictions and just trace leaks of aortic and mitral valves) and we are hoping that the membrane will NOT grow back but her odds are that she will be facing another surgery in years to come. We are anxious to find another solution to her problem besides multiple open heart surgeries to remove this "benign" membrane every few years! We would LOVE to find others in this situation. We have coordinated with Tx Children's on a study of this exact issue in the hopes of finding other solutions.
