About Me (In My Own Words)
I am 72 year old male in excellent health having exercised for most of my life and have had a heart murmur my entire life. My cardiologist suggested I get echocardiograms every few years. In October 2016 I had a standard echocardiogram and my cardiologist found moderate to severe mitral regurgitation. I then had a TEE which apparently confirmed that I needed a valve repair or replacement. The surgeon at Mayo Clinic said there was a 95% chance he could repair the valve. Apparently, he was unable to repair the valve and instead I was given a tissue valve replacement. I am now four months into recovery and learned after another echocardiogram and TEE that, although prior to my mitral valve surgery my aortic valve was not leaking and was functioning normally, now, my aortic valve is moderately leaking and my ejection fraction has gone from normal to 30%. I have an appointment with my cardiologist to see what my options are that do not involve another open heart surgery. That's my story as of April 15, 2017
