About Me (In My Own Words)
I was born with a bicuspid aortic valve. I had my first SAVR at age 43 at the Cleveland Clinic. I just had a SAVR Redo at age 58 at Baylor Scott and White Heart Hospital in Plano, Tx. I am sharing this information as encouragement to others. I chose a bioprosthetic valve, at my first replacement, as I did not want to be on blood thinners the rest of my life. The valve lasted 15 years. I was apprehensive about the SAVR Redo. The surgery went well and my pain is less than the first time. My recovery has also been faster. My first surgery, 15 years ago at the Cleveland Clinic, was a great experience. For my second surgery, I decided to stay in my home State of Texas. My experience with Baylor Scott and White Heart Hospital in Plano was excellent. My care was great. I highly recommend this hospital. My surgeon was Dr. Schaffer. He was fantastic! If I need another valve 2o years from now, I will probably go with TAVR. I will end with this, my SAVR Redo was better than expected and I was happy to have a great surgeon and local hospital to serve me.
