About Me (In My Own Words)
Has been 1 yr the 6th of this month since my mitral valve replacement. Getting along fine since the surgery. I have a little nerve damage, but the trade off for the heart repair well worth it. I had a wonderful team that took care of me and thankful to still be here. Three days after my initial surgery I had what they call delayed tamponade. They came in every morning to do a chest xray. The nurse had rolled me on my side to put the xray board under me and I had a horrible pain across my chest, which at that moment thought my breast bone had cracked. The pain worsened moving across my back and to my head. I was having a hard time breathing. They urgently tied all my medication apparatuses to the bed and rushed me to cat scan to confirm the problem, then directly to surgery. At that point I thought I was checking out. Delayed tamponade is fluid and blood build up between the heart and the sack around the heart. Which I understand does happen occasionally with open heart surgery. I was scared but in good hands. The excellent team of Nurses and Doctors got me through it. Even with the second surgery I was only there 7 days. I did what they wanted me to. Sat in the chair, walked, ate even if not hunger, and used the breathing apparatus daily as much as I could. Only took Ibuprofen for pain couldn't stand the morphine made me feel eccky. The morning after my second surgery I was having breakfast in bed with coffee.
