About Me (In My Own Words)
I’m 61 years of age. I’ve had a heart valve issue for a while which my Cardioligist has been monitoring for the past 18 mths. Last week was admitted to St Andrews War Memorial Hospital in Brisbane for a CT Angiogram and other procedures which determined that the Mitral Valve regurgitation had worsened from ‘moderate to severe ‘ to be now ‘severe’ and requiring immediate surgery intervention. As a result I’m now having open heart surgery to repair/replace the Mitral Valve on the 5 March. Hospital is St Andrews War Memorial, Wickham Terrace, Brisbane. Admission date is 4 March, procedure is following morning on the 5th March. The good news is that if not for competing in last years Cairns Ironman (completed in 12 hrs 18 minutes 😁) when Margy (wife) insisted I have a full medical including a cardio echogram the issue would not have been detected. Post Cairns I have slowly but surely slipped with my performance. It became obvious following a triathlon at Robina and then most recently whilst training with some of our young girls whom I coach. I was struggling to get to high 40’s Kph on our criterium track to stay with them, let alone go past them!
The prognosis is excellent. The cardiology team have advised that my age, overall excellent health, psychological state and competitive nature will lead to excellent outcomes.
