About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed with bicuspid aortic valve which needed replacing. Since it was a bicuspid I wasn't able to get the TAVR so I had open heart surgery. My surgeon also repaired an aneurysm while my chest was open. The surgery was a success but there were several other things that came along with that. I had a partial lung collapse which took several weeks to straighten out. Pretty uncomfortable. Also had to come home from hospital with a catheter. Had that for 10 days. My eyesight changed (!) but came back to what it was a few weeks later. I have had tachycardia since then and am on medications that help with that. I am getting stronger each day. But truly there never was a "pamphlet" that told you any of these things could happen. The surgeon doesn't want to get involved because his part was a success.... so you go to your primary and cardiologist to get assistance. I did go to Cardio Rehab which was a great help.
When you think of the alternative, these past few months have been a struggle and a surprise because you really don't know how everything is going to work out. Definitely worth it so far! Can't say enough about the hospital staff during my stay. All health care workers were angels!
