About Me (In My Own Words)
I was so shocked when I was told I needed OHS and needed my aortic valve replacement last September. I had no idea my ticker was faulty! I was a very busy and active 59-year-old teacher of 3rd graders. I also have a German Shepherd with a lot of energy so we walked daily. The only difference I felt was when hiking steep hills in San Francisco. I felt a heaviness in my chest and was huffing. I thought it was because I was turning 60 soon, 30 lbs overweight, and was sitting around more than I should! Boy was I wrong. My valve had only a 22% flow as I had severe stenosis! I am 12 weeks post-op and have been walking 5-9 miles a day for about 6 weeks. Today I hiked my first hill, talking the whole time with my walking friend, and I didn't have any loss of breath or chest pain!!! We are planning to do a half marathon 13.1 miles in the spring. I am so pleased with my results and am so grateful to my surgeon Dr. J. Allen and his cardiac team for saving my life and to all the nurses who took care of me afterwards.
