About Me (In My Own Words)
In early August 2016 I was diagnosed with moderate mitral-valve regurgitation. I also have PVCs and tachycardia which both occur at times in spite of the arrhythmia medication I've been prescribed.
I have no insurance and hope surgery can be delayed until I qualify for Medicare. I joined this community to learn about valve surgery and for the support of others who have been through what I am facing.
My journey started off a little bumpy. On my first (ever) visit with a cardiologist, I had an EKG, echocardiogram, and was sent off wearing a 24-hour Holter monitor. The next day, when I dropped off the monitor, the "medical assistant" scheduled me for a follow-up with the cardio in six days. She then proceeded to tell me, "the echo showed your mitral valve is leaking". Long story short...with nothing yet prescribed to alleviate my symptoms and no information provided (I turned to the internet), I ended up in the ER five days later--very symptomatic, requiring an IV drug to correct the abnormal rhythm and heart rate.
It's been a bumpy five months since then, but I am slowly beginning to wrap my head around this diagnosis at age 62. I have so many questions, concerns, fears...very grateful to have found this support network.
