About Me (In My Own Words)
I was 43 and had been athletic all of my life - hiking, running, gym goer - but in 2008 I started feeling out of breath, after a hard hike in June I wasn't the same - could not walk up a flight of stairs without gasping. I thought I had inhaled Vog (in Hawaii) but by April of 2009 I knew something was wrong so I went to the doctor. She listened to my heart and sent me for the first of many tests. 12 days later I got a new pig valve. Such a shock since I had no history of heart problems. They believe I had rheumatic fever as a kid which calcified the valve and then the leaflets broke during intense exercise.
All good now! Almost 5 years out and I run, hike, bike, and go to the gym all the time. I had minimally invasive surgery at Oakland's Summit Hospital with Dr Khan.
