About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed with CAS/AI/BAV in May 1981 at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM). I was a pilot candidate but ended up not flying as a pilot. I was authorized to have a waiver for Class 3 (flying in the back of slow moving/banking aircraft). I had to have the waiver updated anywhere between 1 and 3 years until I retired in 1994. I was seen by USAFSAM every three years after retirement until I was 62 years old and Covid hit before I could do another visit.
I was also followed, and continue to be followed, by Dr. Jerry Chandler, Cardiologist now with Ashchi Heart and Vascular Center. He had been a Navy cardiologist that I saw at NAS Jacksonville and now continue to see him after his military retirement.
I was moderate/mild for over 26 years. I then went to mild/moderate for 3-5 years, then moderate with high blood pressure for 4 years, then severe in the last year or so.
I was evaluated extensively by Dr. Chandler, Dr. Azarbal, and Memorial Hospital Heart Team. We agreed to do TAVR and was completed successfully on November 15, 2022 - I am writing this on Friday 11/18/22. So, I'm still recovering and will have more to write about later.
