About Me (In My Own Words)
More than 30 years ago, when I was 24, I had radiation treatment for Hodgkin's disease. The good news is that the treatment cured the cancer. The bad news is that the radiation affected my heart. For at least five years I've known that aortic stenosis would almost certainly progress to the point where I need my aortic valve replaced. In March I learned that it's time for surgery.
Surgery is in two days, on May 12. I flip flop between being anxious and being ready -- ready to get it done with and focus on recovery. I worry about a lot of aspects of the surgery and the recovery and what other damage will emerge from the radiation all those years ago. But then I remind myself that I'm brave, I'm strong, and I'm a survivor. And I take a deep breath.
I've learned a lot already from this community and I am grateful to Adam and to all of the community members who are willing to share.
