About Me (In My Own Words)
I actually didn’t have a valve repair, I instead had a surgery called a Ravitch procedure for a structural deformity in my sternum. In my case, they entered like a typical open heart and directly altered the shape of my sternum, resecting a sliver of the bone and fastening two plates to allow the sternum to heal properly. This is supposed to relieve pressure and stress that the malformation was putting on my heart. My surgeon and his team were incredible. There’s not a single person, from surgeon to patient care tech that wasn’t absolutely wonderful to myself and my family. As far as what’s next goes… I’m not sure yet! I’m only 21, but since as far back as I can remember, I’ve never been able to even speed walk without nearly-dangerous (high) heart rates and palpitations. For the first time in my life, I’ve gone several weeks without feeling palpitations. I’ve always been very active, I am a personal trainer on the side and enjoy weightlifting and sports, so maybe I’ll finally try taking up running!
