About Me (In My Own Words)
Diagnosed at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville with diastolic heart failure and moderate aortic stenosis May 2017. Told to come back in 6 months. Went to local cardiologist but didn't click. I felt as if I was annoying him since I had gone to Mayo. Got another group. Echo showed i was severe now and they did a heart cath in January 2018. Said it wasn't bad enough for a TAVR. Was in Indianapolis for cancer treatments and that put me over the line. I would have died except for outstanding action by my wife and the EMS squad. I wound up in ICU. The Echo there showed very severe stenosis. Fortunately, I was able to get Dr. Heimansohn to read my results and had me in that day. He's the surgeon and his partner in the operation Dr. Hermiller, the interventional cardiologist. I found out you need both in the operation. I assume it's in case something goes wrong. Their staff worked like a machine to get all my testing done and me scheduled. I went into the operating room at 8:45 am and was in my room at 10:00 am. They use conscious sedation so you are not asleep through the procedure. You don't feel anything, not even nervous. I was shocked that when I arrived in my room I realized I could breathe better, in fact, I felt better. I went home the next day and rested for a week. Saw the Dr. one week later, got on a plane and flew back to Florida where I belong. It was a great experience and would recommend it to anyone who needs it. These Drs were great, the Hospital first class, follow up fine. I'm am thankful to God I was able to get the TAVR done. Don't be worried about it, research to find a good Cardiologist, say your prayers and go at it.
