About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed with a mitral valve prolapse in my 20's. It was always minimal to moderate leakage and I was asymptomatic. In November of 2014 my ultrasound showed that my leak had progressed to severe which was confirmed with a TEE test. While I was still asymptomatic, I decided to proceed with surgery. I had my mitral valve repair done robotically at NYU Langone Medical Center by Dr. Didier Loulmet, one of the pioneers of the robotic surgical method. I went in on a Thursday and was home by Monday. They were actually ready to discharge me on Sunday but I chose to stay the additional night since my surgery had been done late in the day.
I was out of CCU the next morning and in a chair Friday morning and walking around the hospital that afternoon. Since my sternum was not cracked or my ribs spread, my incision pain was minimal. My groin incisions actually hurt more. I went back to work in 5 weeks and now 2 months post-op I have 5 small incisions on my right side which has healed nicely and are already fading. My blood pressure is great and my pulse rate is back to normal and I no longer hear my heart beating all the time. I highly recommend Dr. Loulmet at NYU. He specializes in mitral valve repair. My repair was complex but still handled wonderfully by this gifted surgeon. He doesn't post videos like some other surgeons but he is an expert in mitral valve surgery, especially the robotic method. I just turned 51 and am glad I have this behind me.
