About Me (In My Own Words)
At the beginning of May I was diagnosed with a heart murmur during a routine physical exam. After an echocardiogram, it was determined that I was having aortic regurgitation. A week after that (May 18th) I had a heart catheter and a transesophageal scan at Lake West Hospital. I was then introduced to Dr. Marc Pelletier, the Chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. He told me that I had a bicuspic aortic valve, which was in the process of failing, and a prolapsed mitral valve.
On June 30th I had aortic valve replacement surgery and mitral valve repair at University Hospitals Main Campus. I was in hospital until July 5th, at which point I was released. On the 12th I got so dizzy that I had to call 911. When I returned to the hospital, it was determined that I was experiencing atrial fibrilation and cardiac effusion. Doctors performed a second procedure, implanting a chest tube to drain the fluid from my pericardium. This procedure was successful and, after some problems with low blood pressure, I was released and I've been getting stronger ever since. Doing cardiac rehab now (nine weeks out), but feeling better every day.
