About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve in the maternity ward. A resident cardiologist named Dr. Roland noticed an irregular heartbeat and ran further tests. Within 4 months he saved my life and altered it as I underwent an experimental and emerging surgery of conducting balloon valvulopasty through the neck. A second stage with valve replacement was planned when I would turn 4 but was so successful it was not needed and I still have the same bicuspid valve but a slight tear.
Restrictions for me were lifted around middle school for sports. I led an active youth with swimming, cross country, sailing, hiking and active participation in Boy Scouts and their high adventure program.
As an adult I am focusing now on being more health conscious and eating right, doing what I can running, swimming, and cycling, am an adult volunteer for a Boy Scouts Troop, and recently completed a triathlon and aiming for a half marathon. However with this diagnosis I always felt alone and like no one really understood me.
As I get older my regurgitation from my aortic valve is worsening. As a kid this initial procedure had me have very mild regurgitation. I am undergoing more testing to see if I can be an ideal candidate for the Ross procedure. It was an emerging procedure most of my life but the testimonials I see and hear on this forum make me optimistic that if I were to do it, and all is said and done, I could not only live an active lifestyle but exceed what I could do currently.
