About Me (In My Own Words)
My daughter, Haley, has severe aortic valve regurgitation. She is 14 years old and was diagnosed at age 9. She is asymptomatic but conditions have progresses to a point where surgery is warranted. Haley, my wife, and I are struggling with choosing the right procedure. Two talented surgeons have suggested/recommended valve repair first and valve replacement second. Based on all information gathered to this point we are leaning towards mechanical valve replacement for Haley. Haley doesn’t like to think or talk about it too much but she likes the longevity of the mechanical valve option. We are worried about the side affects and burden of taking an anticoagulant. I’d like to get feedback on how easy or difficult it is for children to adapt to restrictions of the mechanical valve, and feedback on those that have opted for valve repair.
