About Me (In My Own Words)
At 74 years old, I was diagnosed with a left atrial myxoma in December 2024 and underwent successful surgery that included a mitral valve repair. My recovery has been remarkably smooth and has even exceeded the expectations of my medical team. I was hospitalized for five nights, including two in the CVICU.
I do had a squeaky voice for the first week after the surgery but it's now normal again.
I've made significant progress in managing post-operative discomfort and have nearly weaned off daily pain medication, though I occasionally take it once or twice a day for back pain which wasn't pre-existing. I find relief from this back pain through the use of cold packs or warm showers. My current exercise tolerance is excellent, as I can walk continuously for 45 minutes while maintaining a conversation without experiencing shortness of breath.
Diet-wise, I'm pleased to report that I can eat a normal range of foods, although I am currently avoiding spices. I am also actively engaging in the exercises recommended by my physiotherapist prior to my hospital discharge.
I've already completed my initial follow-up appointments with both my physician and surgeon in the week following my surgery. I also have a stress test scheduled at my cardiologist's office towards the end of May.
Overall, I am feeling very well and am optimistic about returning to work by mid-June.
