About Me (In My Own Words)
On December 16, 2021 Dr. Allan Stewart sat with me in my office and said he had something to talk to me about. After working with him since 2004 I can pretty much read him and knew whatever he was going to say was not good. He explained to me that after arriving in Miami with him three years ago to assist in the development of a new heart program I was misdiagnosed by the cardiologist taking care of me. I had had a recent echo so requested a copy. By the way the cardiologist had never called me with any results. After picking up the CD I Presented it to Dr. Stewart to review. Which he did. After seeing what he did he presented to one of the cardiologist for confirmation Over 5 years ago I began to feel short of breath going up & down stairs, trying to keep up with my three grandchildren and Dr. Stewart’s twins and older son became increasingly difficult. After being seen by several cardiologist, as well as pulmonologist; I was ready to give up and just live on steroids and water pills.
That day in December I felt as if I was given not a second chance at living (as that was given to me in 1999 with my mitral valve) but a third chance. I immediately contacted my cardiologist in NY because he had followed me for many, many years. He was happy to see me and do another echo to confirm what Dr. Stewart found; all of this
taking place right before the holidays. After my meeting with Dr. Engel I returned to my daughters home where the fam be ily was gathering to spend Christmas -including the newest addition to our children- 6 month old Elio Gusieppi. My son in law is an internist therefore explained what was happening.
to the family. Everyone was in agreement that the surgery needed to take place in Miami with none other than Dr. Stewart. He visited my family during this time explaining the entire operation in detail to them.
Everyone was in agreement that I made the right decision to move to Miami, FL to help get the program off the ground, and no one else but Dr. Stewart was to be the surgeon to operate. As I’ve said before, I have been in Cardiothoracic for close to 20 years and know the best of the best surgeons. One thing has always stuck in my mind and perhaps this was one of the reasons I always knew I would have Dr. Stewart operate on me if and when the time came. There was a surgeon whom worked very closely with Dr. Stewart when was still a young Fellow One day during our many conversations he told me he had never met a surgeon like Dr. Stewart. He said he reminded him of an artist (one of the best artist no less). He simply stated that Dr. Stewart could imagine a picture of the surgery in his head and then go on to paint it exactly as he saw it. Once inside the patient. In other words he could look at the images of a patient, paint in his mind what he planned to do, and once inside carry thru with that image. If a change would become necessary during surgery he could come up with a vision on how to carry that thru as well. The surgeon said he’s never seen anything like it in his life. I have met many other surgeons during my time with Dr. Stewart that all say the same thing. The don’t all describe it in the fashion, , but they all eventually see it and talk about it. In my eyes, he is the NUMBER ONE
SURGEON!!!
