About Me (In My Own Words)
I just wanted to share that I had open heart surgery over a year ago. My job requires that I fly freguently. I did not fly long distances for over 3 months post surgery. I received a notice from American Airlines (the principle airline I use) to inform me that due to my lack of travel with them they were revoking my status. This would mean I would have to pay for bags, etc.
I then wrote a heart felt letter to their CEO Gerard J. Arpey to explain that I had just recovered from open heart surgery- I had a valve replacement and a repair of an Aneurysm due to the valve calcification. I was born with this condition of Aordic Stenosis and had my first surgery at age 5.
That being said I recieved a letter from Mr, Aprey informing me that they have many customers who write with the same concerns and that if I paid several hundred dollars they would reniew my status. I then called American and found out that the same amount they stated in the letter is the same amount anyone can pay to extend their status. I then received a phone call from Mr. Arpey's assistant and he again stated that my only option was to pay the money to renew my status. He also stated that many people write with the same situation. I told him that my medical bills were extensive and I could not offord the amount. They could care less. He had the same response- pay the $. I know I sound like a complainer- but It was important to me to be able to save the 50$ for bags, have seats closer to the front, be able to board the plane sooner so I would not have to stand so long, have seats with more leg room so I would not have to worry about clots, etc but American airlines did not care about any of this- so I thought I would pass along my story.
