About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed with Aortic Stenosis after experiencing numbness in my arm together with dizziness during one of my usual jogs. This sensation was different than I had ever experienced and lingered until the next day. At work, I asked my Boss what he thought I should do. He suggested I go get it checked out. So, I went see my family doctor. He noticed I had heart murmur and arranged for me to see a heart specialist. After having an echo cardiogram, the doctor interpreted the tests as a bicuspid heart valve with severe stenosis of the aortic valve. I was quite surprised to hear the doctor say that I will need to have heart valve replacement surgery, asap. This is the beginning of my acceptance of this situation because I could not totally believe what I was hearing.
Matter of fact, I went out and performed my usual jog up Stone Mountain east of Atlanta, GA as I had consistently been doing for the last three years. This time I ran without having any unusual sensations. Therefore, it leads me to question the doctor’s prognosis and to at least have a second opinion.
I presented the CD of my echo cardiogram test to a surgeon and they confirmed the prognosis as stenosis of the Aortic valve. I was still questioning the prognosis because I never felt better. So I had my cousin Dr. Freddie Wilson look into this to see if he agreed that I would need an aortic valve replacement surgery? He agreed but suggested that I have a heart catheter scope my heart. I did and it revealed stenosis of the aortic valve. After July 4, 2010, the worst time for surgery, I scheduled to have a pig valve replace my diseased valve.
