About Me (In My Own Words)
I am one year post surgery and doing great. My heart beats a little louder and faster than before, but I feel great. My surgery was September 10, 2008 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh. My surgeon (who is awesome) was Dr Thomas Gleason. I had an aortic valve repair and replacement of all of my aorta including the arch. My surgery was quite lengthy and lasted approx. 8 hours. During my surgery my body was cooled to approx. 50 degrees and shut down including brain function for 15 minutes. I am not sure exactly how long I was on bypass but I was told it was quite lengthy. I spent a total of 5 days in the hospital with 2 1/2 spent in CICU. Everyone at UPMC was awesome. I spent 6 weeks in Pittsburgh being pampered by my parents and then flew home to Orlando where I currently live. I am a Realtor and was able to go back to selling houses within 2 to 2 1/2 months of my surgery. I tired easily but managed to do okay. I feel lucky to be alive!
