About Me (In My Own Words)
My history of rheumatic fever sounds much like many stories I've read. It was diagnosed when I was 9 years old living in Zambia, in Southern Africa. I lived an extraordinary life in spite of my heart disease playing golf at the highest amateur and professional levels. On September 20, 2012 I had my mitral valve replaced with a mechanical valve and not 3 months later am happy to say I am feeling great, walking for at least an hour everyday and am on my way back to feeling and acting like an athlete again! I had the mitral valve surgery along with the Maze Procedure performed by Dr. Allan Stewart at NYPresbyterian in Manhattan. I can't say enough about how well I was cared for by the staff. My cardiologists and I opted to have the mechanical valve.
It may be a while till I am able to swing a club as my collar bones and the incision area are still quite painful. I suppose this is when it is key to be patient and let my body heal.
What I can do right now is walk everyday which I am really enjoying. I am building up my stamina and feel like walking hills won't be an issue in the future.
My goal is to play in The Ladies European Senior Championship in April 2013 in France. What fun to even think about competing again!
