About Me (In My Own Words)
My diagnosis began in November of '09. I had a TEE(Transesophogeal Echocardiogram) to rule out endocarditis related to a tooth infection. The exam revealed a large ASD or missing septum between my left and right upper chambers. Upon getting a second opinion at the AMAZING Cleveland Clinic, it was discovered that I also had significant mitral valve regurgitation, right-sided heart enlargement and a lot of hypertrophied muscle. I was devastated yet relieved to know that there really was a real reason for feeling so badly for so long (dyspnea, fatigue, chest pain, etc). So, here I am packing to leave for Cleveland in the am. Preop physical and exams on Wed., surgical and anesthesia consult on Thursday, then back on Monday the 10th for the big surgery. I'm anxious, scared, excited and just about everything in between. The hardest part right now is leaving my 4 yr/old. I worry about the recovery and my limitations; this is his last summer as my baby! I had so many plans for his last summer before school and I that I'll spend the summer trying to recover. But, I'm fortunate to have a patient, loving husband and a fantastic family (including my church family) so I know that we'll both be cared for above and beyond what is needed and he'll still have a great summer. I do plan on cardiac rehab as soon as possible. I've already enrolled in a program in a local facility. This was one of the many valuable tips I picked up from Adam's book which has been the greatest little gift that I've bought myself for awhile! Thanks Adam! Well, better get back to packing...it's about a 6 hr drive for us to Cleveland (won't that be a fun trip home!?!). God bless us all, Amy
