About Me (In My Own Words)
Hi everyone,
I'm in Dorset, UK. I had Covid-19 in March 2020 and for the rest of the year suffered with what I thought was long-Covid (severe fatigue, breathlessness etc).
In Dec 2020 I started getting heart palpitations and a feeling that my heart was working really hard. On Christmas Eve went to the doctor because my heart didn't feel right. I had an ECG (fine) and the doc listened to my heart. He heard a murmur and said I needed blood tests and a heart scan. It took until 10th Feb 2021 to get the scan booked in.
On 10th Feb I went to the hospital thinking I'd be there for an hour or so... but the scan showed I have severe aortic regurgitation and significant ascending aortic root dilation (5.5cm). I'm very tall with long limbs so they thought I may have Marfan's syndrome and may need immediate surgery.
After hours of tests and scans they discharged me with referral for surgery, as I do not have Marfan's and the condition of my aorta walls is good.
I have had various other tests since then and met my surgeon on 11th March. He confirmed I will be having a replacement mechanical valve and part of my aortic root replaced. He'd like it done asap, but due to Covid restrictions we're looking at a 4-6 month wait :-((
Having battled to work for a year I've had to give it up as I'm struggling with the physical aspect of it (I'm a carer), so now I'm just waiting and researching.... Fingers crossed it doesn't take too long.
