About Me (In My Own Words)
I have been told to decide between tissue (cow or pig) and mechanical valve (ON-X).
I think I have a good understanding of the trade-offs but I still find it hard to decide.
I want to consider tissue valve with the hope that either it will last longer (I am 45) or there will be less invasive technology in future should a second surgery be necessary. I also think that I at 60 I may still be strong enough should another surgery be necessary.
On the other hand, I like the fact that mechanical valves are long lasting and probably better performing but somehow the thought of having to take Warfarin (Coumadin) and having to monitor puts me off.
My medical history: Not sure it matters as this was a birth defect.
I went with a tissue valve and the surgery (minimally intrusive) was successful. I spent 4 days in the hospital. Half way through the cardiac rehab. Enjoying it!
I am very happy with my choice of the type of valve, surgeon and hospital. The hospital staff is excellent!
