Hi Susan. My name is Jacqueline Cook. I am a mitral valve prolapse patient with severe regurgitation. I am in the process of interviewing surgeons. I was wondering if your surgeon asked you to pick a valve (tissue / mechanical) just in case a repair was not possible once he got into doing the procedure? The first surgeon felt that there was an 80-90% chance that he could repair the valve, but I should pick an alternative in the event that he got in there and could not repair the valve. I was wondering if your surgeon asked you to do this?

Susan Wozniak No we never duscussed that. He felt that he would be able to repair it if I had the surgery sooner rather than wait. Thankfully it all worked out well.
Jacqueline Cook Thanks for letting me know. Glad everything has worked out for you and you are healing well!

Susan Wozniak That is my biggest problem so not too bad in the scheme of things. Just wish I could get one night of sleep! You sound like you are in good hands and this will all be behind you! Recovery isn't as quick as I hoped but the whole thing changes your perspective on things. You will see how thoughtful people are! Have a great celebration and try to get some rest! They don't let you sleep in the hospital 😀

Susan Wozniak Hi Linda- i am continuing to do well. Just a few strange things here and there. As you can see still having a hard time sleeping but it is due to tightness of the water retention vs any real pain. I think you will be happy with your choice of procedure. I do think you heal faster and although you do worry with every weird twinge I think not having to worry about your sternum helps! Today was a beautiful day and I was able to walk 3 x the last time being for half an hour! Thanks for checking in with me. I am still on pain meds so hard to focus! Have a good day!

Linda McHugh Thanks for the update. It does sound like you are doing greatly good for such a short time post op. Really worrying about my new grandbaby. My daughter is 37 weeks and for about the post 4-5 weeks she is not growing at the right pace and the baby's average weight for age keeps dripping. She was in the 40% range then 20% range and as of last Friday, 13% range. Very scary. Her doctor now has message in to specialist. I'm going to suspect the baby may be delivered early. Niw I really need to get things together this week early just in case!
Thanks so much for asking...that was very sweet!

Susan Wozniak Hope all goes well with the baby- The good news is they are wstching closely. I saw where you asked what to pack-I packed a few comfortable shirts and capris (pj set) my own face soap toothpaste, etc. I honestly wore thier gones until I went home! They provided all I needed. I was too groggy to read except for my phone. You really are pretty drugged.,.Things I wish I would have bought were good compression socks. We have to wear them for 4-6 weeks and they are hard to find depending on size, color, etc!! The hospital gave me two pairs. I packef way too much! Never put on makeup just didn't care. Earplugs would be good and I brought headphones for music. Have a good night!
Susan, have you been able to have your surgery reschuled yet. I am sure you are anxious to proceed. Best of luck to you!

Susan,
Just read about your surgery postponement. Ugh. That must be a rollercoaster for you. It's so draining to gear up for that and then to postpone it? No fun!
I did want to ask you more questions about your heart cath exercise test. So why didn't they just do a treadmill test to see how your heart functions with exercise? What did they learn about your heart that they did not know. Was it the same amount of exertion as a treadmill test? Did they squirt stuff into your heart or were they just taking measurments? What kind of symptoms were you having prior to the test?
Thank you so much. It is difficult to find someone who has had this procedure.

Susan Wozniak Sorry for the late reply but I just saw this. From my understanding they were trying to measure how exercise effected the blood flow through my heart upon exertion and that showed more detail than just a stress test. I kept pushing them though because this test didn't seem to show I needed surgery. After I told them I was feeling worse they did a stress test on a treadmill and that showed them more. My symptoms were shortness of breath going up stairs, hills or carrying things- to the point I am panting. Also if I crouch down I get faint. I can't remember for sure if dye was involved or not. The test itself was not bad- I found it pretty amazing that they could do it. Let me know if I can help anymore. When are you having it done?
