Hi Simon,I came across your post regarding valve choice and learned that you were diagnosed with BAV and aortic aneurysm 20 years ago. I’m Sushil, 24 years old, and I’ve recently been diagnosed with BAV and an ascending aneurysm of 4.7 cm. I wanted to ask how the size of your aorta progressed over the years and what steps you took to help slow down its growth.

Simon Mezz Hi Sushil, I first discovered I had BAV and aneurysm when I was 35 years old. Back then I was told I would likely need surgery in my mid 40’s but turns out I will most likely be 56 when I have it done. With what we have it can be either the valve or aneurysm to triggger the surgery. My aneurysm was 3.8cm when first diagnosed and got to 4.6cm within the first 10 years. It then has stayed the same size 2018. My valve started with just a trivial leak and stenosis progressed slowly. The valve is what has become the trigger for surgery. For me the valve has deteriorated in a linear fashion and now I have severe stenosis. Having said that I have no symptoms and my stress test shows I’m fitter than most in my age group. Only step to slow it down was starting blood pressure meds around 2019. I Told my cardiologist I didn’t want my BP medicated too low as I don’t want to feel tired all the time. My medication dropped it from around 135/85 to around 115/75 which has not caused me any issues. Hope this helps you.
