So glad to hear that Ryan is doing well! Have been following along with the journals. I was diagnosed with bicusipid aortic valve at the age of 9 and expected to have surgery any time. Here I am 32 years old and endocarditis is necessitating it finally happening next month. Good luck to Ryan and family through his recovery and I'm glad he gets to experience growing up knowing his valve is handled instead of constantly worrying.
As a parent I understand what you are going through. When my youngest who is now over two was 6 weeks old he went in for open heart surgery. As a member of the "zipper club" myself this year(2/20/12). I know he's in good hands and you can recover quickly from this. I am feeling great and keeping up with my boys. My youngest we keep a close eye on as he still has a Bicuspid calve with a gradient of 34 so we know at somepoint he will need something done again.
Good luck to you and your family and we will be praying for you today.
Ryan and family...best of luck tomorrow and in your recovery. Sunday will mark 6 months from my ohs to repair my mitral valve. Tomorrow I am blessed to be celebrating another birthday. You will be in my prayers. Karen campo
Hey, Ryan.. We will be thinking & praying for you tomorrow. I know you are probably really nervous. Just take a deep breath & it will all be over before you know it and then you can get back soon riding your skateboard. You are an strong amazing kid!! Your parents are pretty amazing too!! Just think how much better you are going to feel after its all over & done with. Take care & talk to you soon!! :)
I work with teens and I am impressed by your courage Ryan - living is a gift and every moment counts. The pain is NOT as bad as childbirth and you get to sidestep that one so this will be an easy trip - when you look back -compared to having a baby : )
Also - get a small cordoroy bean bag - Amazon sells one. Great for at home in bed! Looks much better than pillows and foam wedges and molds to your back and neck and head and adjust easily. Later you can just plop on it with friends. Around 30 bucks and well worth it.
Hope you are keeping up with school - in light of things school work seems silly but you will be happier if you can hang with your class later.
My surgery was an emergency and a complete surprise but boy it is great to have oxygen flowing everywhere now. 24 hours after surgery, I could feel the difference! Breathing is a good thing.
Hi there. My name is Sylvia, I live in Durban South Africa. My son Matthew had the Ross Procedure done when he was 1o years old. If you would like to ask any questions feel free to email me. Regards, Sylvia
The hospital has pillows but they are plastic so they aren't the best. A few other things I brought and was glad I had...hard candy (some medicines gave me bad after taste in my mouth) my own pj pants to wear under the hospital gown, slippers and my ipod.
He is going to do great. I am 29 which is older than ryan but I know my age has helped my recovery go faster than some.
One thing I wasn't expecting was I got a lot of migranes after surgery. I had only had one or two before surgery..they lasted about two weeks and then stopped.
Valve repair and graft placed in acsending aorta-9-10-12
Ryan is going to do great. I am about 1year post AVR. The breathing tube...I don't remember anything about it! It was out by the time I can recall any details. Ryan is young and he will bounce through the surgery and recovery better than us older folks. Seriously, the waiting is the worst part. Once the big day comes, one moment he will be talking to his nurse in the prep area and in an instant it will be over...onto the road of recovery.
We are all there for you mom and Ryan. I have 3 teenage boys of my own...he will do great!
Good luck with everything. One of my biggest fears was waking up with the breeathing tube as well. I did wake up and know the tube was there but it was not as bad as I expected the nurses assured me I was ok and went back to sleep.
I will keep Ryan and your family in my prayers. I would guess that Ryan will handle the stress of surgery better than mom & dad! Like so many have said, the wait is the hardest part. Ryan's wait is nearly over.
Our daughter has a home in Milford. Is Milford near Middletown?
