Pat, I had my AVR Aug 14, 2012. Took amiodarone because of A-Fib. After a couple weeks at home, I developed serious lung problems caused by amiodarone. I had been walking every day without problems then suddenly my lungs felt stiff and congested. I was running short of breath. I stopped taking the drug Sep 25. My lungs are much better and I can walk fast and take stairs OK. Since Sep 27 my A-Fib has become less frequent.
Research on the web reveals that amiodarone has many nasty side effects.

You are not alone. Many of the post surgical heart drugs cause lots of side effects and I\'d put Amiodorone at the top of that list. It made me so nauseous I could not eat and I lost 30 lbs. Fortunately, I was only on it for a month after I got home. The only thing I could eat were a few potato chips - which I normally do not eat. But for some reason, they settled my stomach. My doctor also prescribed Pepcid - which helped a little. I found the water pill I was on also caused nausea. Finally the nausea went away very slowly after stopping those medications. It took me a long long time - like 3 months - to re gain my appetite. Ruth Howell, Maine

I have had anesthesia that didn\'t bother me at all and then I have had anesthesia and been so sick (nauseated) that I wanted to die!! Hope that isn\'t an issue with open heart surgery!
Guess I will find out March 13th!
Good luck with the nausea, will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Pat Culley Thanks for writing me Linda. Hopefully you won't have A-Fib post op and won't have to have this drug. Plus, not everyone gets bad nausea, sometimes just a drop in appetite. Funny, mine did not start 'til I got home.

I didn\'t realize the amioderone was the cause of lack of appetite after the same surgery three years ago. I do remember as a red headed Irishman I could get sunburned getting close to a light bulb until the amioderone cleared out of the system. It was good for the a-fib but that is all it was good for. Eventually food starts to taste good again and we have to start dealing with the scale again. I wasn\'t even allowed in the front seat of the car for six weeks after surgery(air bags) let alone drive. It looks like you are doing well, but just don\'t push to hard. It takes a long time to recover from this.

I\'m glad you stopped taking that drug. I was placed on it for afib prior to surgery and had a severe allergic reaction. I then did quite a bit of research and yes it does help thousands of people. However it is one of the most toxic drugs out there and is usually only used as a last resort type of medication when no others will work. I\'m just glad your off. Also my appetite is still no where near where it was. Which is quite normal from what I\'ve been told. Now I\'m eating small amounts of food more times a day. You may want to try that.

We r gonna try to get the fla keys to our condo to recuperate a little more end of the month. Dr says should be ok so will know soon. Pain manageable. And yee gads the number of new pills! Omg.

I looked up this pounding and printed out 22 pages from our website here ..of similar complaints and experiences with this pthumping side effect. I will present it to the surgeon and my cardio, FOR their information! How could they NOT have heard of this? They aren\'t listening a lot I guess? All in all, it is great they can do what they have done for us but as good as new probably isn\'t the best description? Best wishes as you recuperate and get onto the next order of business, KNEE replacement? May that be smooooooooth as well! My prayers are with you .

Thankfully have been soooo busy that I really haven\'t given this whole thing a lot of Thot. Got my new robe - Jammie\'s and even a new power recliner ! I\'m good.
2-8 is cath & depending what that shows will decide I on incision. While I\'d like a mini - if I need the full it would probably not show as much. Well know more Wednesday night Procedure is next day 2-9

Sorry I haver't written in a while. I am doing better. Been busy going to post-op visits and trying to do a few things with the business. I am almost @ 4 weeks post-op. Nausea and appetite are improving....energy is improving but at a snail's pace for me. I have a lot of osteo arthitis especially in my thorax, so the post op pain from laying on the operating room table for 5 hours in a not so good position was hard on me.
My incision is great though. Very tiny and starts much lower than most, so I can wear a lot of stuff now without the scar even noticeable. It is about 6 inches but most of it in the low cleavage area.....So that part was great.
I am sure you will do fine. First 2 weeks are a little rough...some people have it easier than others. You are strong and busy with your business so am guessing your recovery will be above average for your age. Hey, I did it and still plugging along, so you can too. Best of luck and thanks for thinking of me.

Plus you have sort of been hit by a truck, maybe you are just having a little delayed reaction from all your body has been through. Wish I could be more help, but haven\'t been there yet. Also, don\'t know if you are on any meds, but that is a thought. Keep us updated.
