Hi Katherine, My son was 24 when we found out he had a bicuspid valve that was severely leaking. He had his surgery 3 years ago and they did a repair of his aortic valve. in the middle of the surgery they also bipassed his coronary artery because it was in a bad place. He was in the hospital for 4 days and back to school in four weeks. I found the waiting is the worst thing. Of course as a mother it was the scariest time of my life. I can empathize with everything you are feeling. Because your son is in great shape his recovery will be fast. My thoughts are with you and your son.

Hi Katherine,
I had my BAV replaced with a mechanical last Friday. Today is my first full day home, and so far so good. I go to my first INR check tomorrow and am having so pain in my lower back that is worse than my chest/sternum. Hopefully it will be short lived. My infant niece had open heart surgery in January to repair 3 structural issues not valve related and she is doing great! I have a faith your son is in hood hands and will recover fast!

Nicolas McWatters Hi Angela, thank you so much for commenting. Congrats on being home so soon after your surgery. We had Nicolas' pre op appointment today and they said he will be in ICU for 1-3 days and in the hospital for 1-2 weeks. I'm hoping he will recover well and not have to spend more than a week there. His health is so good otherwise they are optimistic that everything will go smoothly. Did your doctors mention you may have pain in your back, is that normal? I feel for you, it must be so difficult. I'm also glad to hear your nieces doing well, do heart problems run in your family?
Thanks again for your comments.

I am on blood thinners. So far, so good with that. I am moving to every other Week for testing my level. Then hopefully move on to once a month. Apparently, they can do it with a finger stick now but my insurance is not wanting to cover that. I do hear the valve clicking but like anything else, have gotten used to it. As far as recovery goes, I still like sleeping in our recliner or on the couch with my feet up. We had people bringing food and my husband really stepped up around the house. He stayed home with me for about 4 days and then the surgeon allowed me to be on my own with just the 4 year old here. I spent a lot of time sleeping while my 4 year old watched cartoons.

Nicolas McWatters That's wonderful that you had so much support, I think that makes all the difference. I think we may invest in a recliner, I keep reading those are very comfortable for recovery. I'm glad to hear the blood thinners aren't too much of an issue, nor is the clicking sound. It's just nice to hear from someone that has recovered so well. Your family must be thrilled to have you up and healthy again. Thanks again!

I got a new mechanical valve to replace a bicuspid valve. I also had a repair of an aortic aneurysm. I am 46 and mother of 3 kids under 13. The first two weeks of recovery were definitely the hardest. I can now walk 2 miles in under 30 minutes and take care of stuff here at the house ( laundry, dishes, etc)

Nicolas McWatters I Can't imagine your poor body trying to recover as you take care of three young children, you must be very strong. I'm so happy for you that you are doing so well. Are you on blood thinners? If so, do you find any issues with these? Do you hear any sound from the mechanical valve? I've heard some people hear a clicking sound. Any things you can recommend I get for my sons recovery at home? Thank you so much for responding, I have felt so helpless in terms of helping Nicolas through this all. This seems to give me a sense of control.
