Hi Kristen,
I had the same diagnosis as you but I am 60 years old. I was diagnosed a year ago with severe stenosis of the aorta valve with the valve being bicuspid. They told me I was probably born with this defect. I did not understand because I never had a problem when I was younger. I was terrified and scared and had no idea what this all was. I had to educate myself on the surgery and the valve I wanted to go with. My symptoms were starting to get worse such as light headed, out of breath and extreme fatigued. I finally got the courage to have my surgery January 22, 2024. I went with the biological valve, being I only have to be on blood thinners for three months. I will probably need a replacement valve surgery 7 to 15 years but will then qualify for the TAVR procedure. I am going on my 7th week of recovery getting better each day. I am walking 30 minutes everyday, doing stretches and feeling better each day. The surgery was a success and was so grateful for this and the cardiology department over at Kaiser Los Angeles Medical Hospital. My surgeon was Dr. Yun. My suggestion is, just educate yourself on the surgery and the valve you want to go with. Just remember if you do go with the mechanical valve you will have to do these INR blood test weekly to assist in the daily dosage of the warfarin you take. I am only on the blood thinners for three months. If you have anymore questions please reach out to me. I will answer any questions you may have. And if you are active you will have no problem after the surgery. Stay positive. :)
