Hi Deena,
You have received great feedback on cardiac rehab from Adam and many others here at the site. I will add my own 2 cents on why it is so important to pursue a CR program following your procedure.
I completed my 36-session rehab program which started 5 weeks post op. Like so many of us who have heart surgeries I was sore, anxious and apprehensive about my heart and my future. The rehab team helped me ease into a supervised exercise routine that was individualized to my status and condition and gave me great confidence and support in my recovery. I completed a 10-k run 11 months after my surgery and I attribute my excellent recovery in good part to my CR program participation.
I appreciated their work so much that I have volunteered in that program to assist other heart patients who are going through what I went through and can benefit from speaking to someone who has been where they are in the recovery process.
There are excellent clinical studies showing that patients who complete a full cardiac rehab program have better outcomes and long-term cardiac health and wellness compared to those who do not. Please pursue the program that is available to you - you won't regret it!

Lee Wright Thanks for the information Mark, so helpful and I love that you are now volunteering!!!
Deena Royal Thank you! The information I have received is a definite go for CR as soon as I am able.π

Hi Deena, I echo everyone else's comments about cardiac rehab. I too had MVP with regurgitation. My surgery was a repair. I was active before my surgery but the rehab was the best thing I could have done. It helped me deal with fear of working out at my accustomed intensity and plus I learned a lot about exercise and reaching my target heart rate. My surgery was 3 years ago and I'm doing fine. Good luck w/your surgery & rehab!

Hi Deena. I had heart valve replacement back in February. I started cardiac rehab about 5 weeks after getting home from the hospital; I was in the hospital for 6 days. I only managed to get about 4 sessions in before COVID hit and closed down the facility. For me, I had what I needed at home with a stationary recumbent bike and treadmill and light weights and resistant bands. All things you need for rehab. I got exercise guide from the Nurse and just put myself on a 3 - 4 day per week workout schedule. I was amazed how my strength, energy, and stamina came back about 8 weeks after starting my cardiac rehab routine.
You will be fine. Find your routine and stick to it. Be sure to rest because this is part of the healing process! Good luck and God bless

Hello Deena,
I also had (the same) surgery at UM. All went very well, and the team is great.
I did not go to cardiac rehab: at 6 weeks post-op visit, progress was significant and I was told I was doing my own rehabilitation. I had setup daily goals and methods that were very simple but apparently were working well, and documented the efforts daily. I can share details if you are interested. Your UM team will certainly guide you, they are excellent.
Blessings.

David S Hi Deena,
Here are some details. As you will see, there is nothing complicated.
First, I set out to only have daily goals, and mostly focus on improvements from one day to the next. I had my mind set on not thinking about what I had lost, or how hard it was since these are not controllable factors. Prior to surgery, I had also decided to not use a phone or a computer for 2 weeks so I could focus with the help of family at home. I had no visitor either, which of course these days is obvious (my surgery was one year ago).
Walking: shortly after I was home, I started walking, focusing on distance and not time. I wrote down my "performance", although I had never done this before. I graphed the distances/day. Deep breezing and slow walking quickly became the best moments of the day: the pain subsides, the mind clears. The next day, I could do a little more, just focusing on distance. I walked more than once per day as soon as I could. It helped sleeping and finding a rhythm.
Pilates: I have done Pilates for many years. If you don't know the movements and breezing method, that is fine. The goal was to re-discover good posture, help shoulder pain, and eventually regain core muscles. I set 1 year to return to pre-surgery level but it took about 6 months. Once I could, I used the kitchen table (the floor is too low) with pillows to be on my back and move legs and arms very slowly to stretch (very slowly, very gently). Breezing here is critical. Sessions were no more than 10 minutes. I don't think you could see my movements initially, they were so small. But the position feels very good. If you try to have left and right balance and let go of tensions, soon everything stretches. After a little while, I could remove one of three pillows, then two, then I could go from 3 to none and be flat for a few moments, and then start other movements, always centered on breezing and core flexibility.
I am not suggesting times or distances, everyone is different. I am just describing the first few weeks, but the rest is just more of the same. And these are the general ideas in the hope you can find your own tricks and choose what works for you. Of course, I did not do this alone: my wife and children gave it all they could.
If you need further details, let me know.
Best, David.

Hi, Deena~
I'm in the 5-15% of all heart valve patients whose first surgery failed. I didn't even know that could happen! After my second (and successful) surgery, realizing how different hospitals and surgeons can be, I wondered if rehab facilities and therapists could differ significantly as well. So I went and checked out the
two other rehabs within my driving distance and this time, picked a different one. Even though it was further away, it was much larger, had more equipment that fit my needs, and a MUCH more helpful staff. So my advice to you is, if there are several cardiac rehab facilities covered by your insurance to choose between, check them ALL out before you decide, rather than just going to the closest one you'll be referred to. Or have a friend or relative check them out and report back. Different cardiac rehab facilities can vary dramatically, but going to rehab is SO, SO worth it. Best of luck to you, Deena!
Deena Royal Thank you for the good advice about checking out all rehab centers!

Hi Deena - so glad you joined this forum! Lots of folks have shared your adventure ahead, and I will add that cardiac rehab was important and positive for me as well, but it's less of anyone really checking on how you are doing and more a "care for the thoughts in your head" affirmation that you are okay! I had the expectation that I would be looked after by the nurses and exercise pros in charge, but my experience was that I connected more with a few other patients and learned how to challenge the bad thoughts when you feel the twangs and twitches in your chest after surgery. Sounds like our story is similar. I didn't know I needed mitral valve surgery (I had a sternotomy procedure in May 2016) until I had an echo that showed I had severe regurgitation. I was in the hospital for 7 days and started wound care with a silicon patch to prevent scaring after the scabs were gone. I'd recommend planning for as much as you can to keep your days as free and easy when you get home, you will need to sleep and rest for weeks before doing much of anything! Sending you best wishes for a quick recovery!! Glad to chat anytime!

Hi, I started rehab at six weeks from hospital release (I was in the hospital for 12 days due to complications). I went back to work at 8 weeks from release. I worked full time and three days a week drove 45 minutes to rehab after work. Best decision I ever made. Gave me confidence to be more active and helped rebuild my stamina. Did so well that even though the program was for 12 weeks, I βgraduated β after 6 weeks.

I had had mittarted as soon as I could and strongly recommend. Fortunately several rehab groups were available in my area. At my first group, the rehabbers stuck to themselves, never spoke, nothing educational, staff never spoke, only took your vitals when you entered, gave you a printed routine and when done took your vitals again. I lasted two weeks and tried another hospital rehab, day and night difference , rehabers realized we had a common bond despite wide range of ages, supported one another, staff was terrific started each session with a joke, encouraged the slackers and monitored the overachievers , we had speakers ( rehab alums, nurses, dietitians, etc) twice a month that shared experiences, recipes, health tips. Each session staff walked around regularly to monitor vitals while we were on treadmill, bike, etc. a 10 minute session of lifting weights followed and everyone was monitored closely before they left. Another fellow and I had low blood pressure and we drank lots of water before allowed to leave. I am still in contact with some of those folks. Good luck. I made my reservation before surgery to save a spot.
Deena Royal Looking forward to the rehab based on everyone's input.
Thank you Patti!

Hi Deena- I had a bicuspid aortic replacement. I was to have been contacted by our local hospital by referral from my cardiac doctor but they never contacted me. I have and continue to be a self starter and have followed a weekly exercise routine all my life. Thus with advise from my heart surgeon and cardiac dr I did my own rehab with much success. From what I hear the rehab with other patients provides mental therapy as well as physical. I would have enjoyed this. I suggest the rehab about 30 days after surgery. After completing the organize sessions I suggest regular exercise the rest of your life. If you belong to a gym I suggest asking your surgeon and cardiac dr if this is wise due to Covid 19 and general flu et al. I decided to drop my gym membership after 42 years and do much of my strength exercise with resistance bands, walking and stationary bike at home. I do miss the social interaction at the gym.
The best of luck to you and I will keep you in my thoughts!!

Hi Deena....I had mitral valve way back in December of 2106. I had my surgery done with assistance of a robot. I had 4 tiny incisions made for the insertion of the robotic arms. The surgery was a success, I was in the hospital 3 days. No rehab was needed and I was back to normal in 3 weeks.

Theresa LoMonaco I wish you the best, Deena. I highly recommend cardiac rehabilitation. I started it 8 weeks after having an aortic valve replacement 8 years ago. I started back to work 7 weeks post-surgery. It helped me regain my strength and it helped prevent post cardiac surgery depression. I went 3 times/week before work for two months. Iβm doing great and Iβm much older than you. I can work out harder now without risking heart issues. You will do well. Adamβs book and blog gave me good information and support. Love to you. Deena Royal Hi Jackie!
They changed my date of surgery to 9/22. Unfortunately they will be opening the chest to repair my mitral valve, possibly my tricuspid, and a little hole in the heart. I am staying positive. Glad to hear you are feeling better after two weeks. It gives me hope! I plan on not over doing it but it will be hard not to.π Thank you for the uplifting words!
