Debbie Kelly Don, your heart has an electrical system, and at times, it goes on the blink. I can't give you the best description because I'm not an expert. The pacemaker is having to help your heart beat at a normal rate. I have read your posts and sympathize with all of the issues you have had. My dad suffered with depression, as well, because of his many heart related problems. Please think of your family, knowing how much they love and care for you. I would beg my dad to never give up, and I can honestly, say he never did.
Hang in there, lean on your heart warrior family, and cry out to us whenever you want.
Thank you for your thoughtfulness regarding my cousin's husband. He is going to have to be transported to another hospital so that someone can determine what caused his heart attack.
God bless you.

Debbie Kelly Hi Renee, how exciting that you and I live close!!!! Dr. Bree is an excellent doctor, from what I have been told. I chose Dr.John Isacc, after going onto the Nextdoor app and a R.N. from Willowbrook Hosital recommended him. Dr. Bree was on the list of names that who was highly recommended.
At my first appointment, I did not realize that there was a clinical trial program being performed at Methodist Med Center for low-risk patients for TAVR. Needless to say, I was very excited to be accepted.. The downside to TAVR is because the procedure has only been done for six or seven years, I cannot be given an estimate of how long the device will work. And, in my case, I will be receiving one of the newest on the market.
You can follow me on this website, and then we can exchange phone numbers/e-mail addresses. I do not know how to go into your profile so that I can follow you. I would love to hear more about your story.
BTW- everyone at the Valve clinic and at Methodist have been so supportive and ready to answer my multitude of questions. I have been assigned Dr. Readon and Dr. Barker.
I wish you the very best for you. Have you been classified as severe, yet?
Thank you for your well wishes. I look forward to talking to you more!

Thank you for your responce. As I mentioned I get my semi-annual echo on Monday and at last years echo I was moderate. I'm hoping nothing has changed in my condition because TAVR is expected to be approved for everyone by year end , and that way I stand a very good chance of getting it done by TAVR, when the time comes. I'm happy you are able to get the procedure and wish you the best.

Debbie Kelly Hi Jessica, Both Dr. John Isaac and Dr. Weston Hickey are great cardiologists with excellent bedside manners. I chose Dr. Isaac. I know he has an office at the Med Ctr., and I think Dr. Hickey does too, as well as around Cypress. Their number is 713-791-1978. They have privileges to The Methodist Hospital. I have been referred to Dr. Ross Ruel and Dr. Michael Reardon at the Methodist Hospital, both top-notched surgeons. Please get a second opinion. I am extremely overweight and never, once, had a doctor talk to me the way you have been talked to. Now fact, I told Dr. Reardon that I keep gaining weight because I am too exhausted to exercise. He told me, "Let's get you well, first, then think about getting back in shape". I thought that was very sweet. Also, you may want to check out Dr. Stephen Little. He is in with those surgeons, too, and a great cardiologist, as well.
I will be praying for you. Congratulations on getting married! Please keep us posted, and get well, soon!!!!
Okay, praying for your big decision day tomorrow! We want the best possible scenario (and surgeon) for you!!! Good luck! 🙏🏼

Debbie Kelly Hi Chris, it's great hearing from you. I would travel to Miami if I had someone to join me. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone. I read that Dr. L went back to Miami because of family, as well. TAVR is being experimented on the low risk patients at our Methodist Hospital here in Houston, and perhaps, at St. Luke's. If I can get this done and have it last me, at least through retirement, then I will consider going somewhere else. If I don't qualify, I am going to have to pray even harder for God to lead me in the right direction.
Keep in touch! We enjoy your posts!!!

Hi Debbie, sorry this response is tardy. I just saw your post on my guestbook. I don't come here much any more. Surgery with Dr. Lawrie was very good. He did a terrific job, but he only does full sternotomies. He does not do minimally invasive surgery. So, no matter how beautiful his incision and closure, you will still have a line going down your body. I am very proud of it and show it off whenever I can, but not everyone feels that way :-)
Dr. Lawrie has been doing the surgery for a long time and my opinion is that he thinks you know things just because he knows them and has said them so many times. He didn't tell me to wash with antibacterial soap prior to the surgery. I knew to do it because of this website. When I signed in for my surgery that morning I was asked if I had washed with the special soap, and my surgery would have been cancelled if I hadn't taken the initiative to buy Dial antibacterial and use it the night before and morning of.
The surgery was pretty painless. The anesthetist was fantastic. He saw I was frightened and he knocked me out as soon as I had completed all the paperwork! The nursing staff, for the most part were wonderful and attentive. I was kept in the hospital for 7 days which is longer than most people are kept in because I had no one to help me at home.
The food at Houston Methodist is horrid. I barely ate and lost a lot of weight because of it. The fruit plate and cottage cheese is good. The grilled cheese sandwiches are so rubbery they bounce if you drop them.
The bed was comfortable.
I had some issues with my heart rate and blood pressure. I had migraines. All of that cleared up after about 6 weeks. Because I didn't have any a-fib, I wasn't put on any blood thinners. And after week 6 I was taken off the blood pressure medications I had been on for the last 3 years. So, I am off all medications.
I had no trouble taking care of myself when I left the hospital. I slept a lot. I had made and frozen soup before I left and I ate that, and had delivery of pizza, Chinese food, sandwiches, because I felt I deserved it. But that was very bad of me. I was able to shower by myself using a shower chair. I was able to wash my hair, do the laundry if I carried light loads, and let the dogs out to do their business. I was able to dress myself and use the bathroom without help. Mostly you will sleep.
Feel free to let me know if you have further questions. Sending best wishes and the assurance that the fear really is worse than the experience.

Debbie Kelly It is great hearing from you, Anna. I have missed your posts. Thank you so much for the info and advice.
I looked up a former co-worker and talked to him last year. I knew he had minimum invasive aortic valve replacement many years ago and was confused who did it. I also remembered he was at the Methodist. Turns out Dr. Lawrie did the minimum invasive on him 18 years ago. I would like to know why he no longer uses that method. Maybe it's his age or could it be because there is a surgeon in the same office, now, who does the minimum invasive. I sure would like to know. My cardiologist does not recommend I use, anyone, but Dr. Lawrie or, possibly, have TAVR. Because I work and live alone, I do not want the full sternectomy at the point in my life. I cannot afford to miss that much work unless I absolutely have to.
I may be one of those fortunate ones that Methodist accepts for the low to no risk TAVR program. I am praying!
Please stay in touch, my fellow Texan and heart warrior. God bless you.

Anna Jones God bless you too, Debbie. If I remember correctly Dr. Lawrie told me that the minimally invasive surgery was the most difficult surgery he has ever had to perform and he prefers the full sternotomy because it gives him the best views and the best tactile feedback, and he felt it has the best outcomes.
Please keep me posted, and if you have any further questions, I am happy to answer.

Debbie Kelly Thank you both, Chris and Anna. I go see my cardiologist in September and will go soon for a consult with Dr. Lamelas. My hospital of choice would have been Methodist, but I am sold on Dr. L. He was on t.v. Not too long ago with a patient, and that's when I made my final decision. I pray that I am a candidate!
My mother had hers replaced when she was 83 at St. Luke's with invasive surgery. Although, she did really well, she never fully got her strength back. She had to have several transfusions, and it took a couple of years and more transfusions to get her blood count up. She was a trooper and a very strong woman. I am the opposite-a bottle of nerves.
I am so glad that you both are doing well. God bless you,

Debbie Kelly Hi Chris, I am just now seeing your message to me. First, I hope Day 3 and beyond are much better than Day 2. I felt so bad for you, reading the pain level you were at. What I fear most is pain. I am a bit of a wimp.
Now that you are in the recovery phase, if you had to do it all over again, would you still have chosen Dr. Lamelas? I don't know if you saw my message to you, but I reached out to one of his patients whom operated on him when he practiced in Miami. He claims there is no one better than Dr. Lamelas, which makes me feel very secure in my decision to use him.
I am not sure when I will be having my surgery, but I am in the severe stage now. I am going through anxieties daily and just want it over with. I feel like my life is on hold until then. I am afraid to travel. I am sure you can relate.
