Good input. I went to an ENT, he ran the tests and declared it was not positional. I went to a neurologist, she did an MRI on head/neck and declared nothing wrong there, must be inner ears. 😒 Amiodorone made me so sick, could hardly eat for the first month and lots of throwing up. Thought it may have been cause but after going off it the vertigo kept on. They did lessen some, slowly, but still major issue. Last year we moved to SC in retirement and I decided to try chiropractic for whole balance issue. He did tests, did an Epley, but that is not cause so… he believe with episodes of eyes suddenly not focusing (happened about 5 times over first yr) and poor balance the issue is both sides of brain not working together. I thought that all along, always felt something changed in my brain. Am doing daily ocular/ left right exercises and praying it works permanently.

Michelle Payne Claudia, I had similar results after my mitral valve repair in 2019. The severe vertigo resolved, but I still have occasional dizziness, SOB, and visual problems. My vision problems after surgery were bad. I even had temporary loss of vision in my left eye. However, now the issues are occasional. I have mainly blurred vision at times and flashing lights. A cardiovascular surgeon who consulted with my stepdad told me the visual problems are caused by the cardiopulmonary bypass. It's continual pressure rather than pulsating pressure and damages the small delicate vessels in the eyes. He said it's his number one complaint from patients. Glad you're retired. I hope to retire in a year.

Richard Munson I still think vertigo cause is my heart surgery called pump head. Never prove it though. Had a pair of incidents hopefully never again. Scary. Eye doctor said no, heart surgeon said no. Strange i never had it before heart surgery. Brain not working in sync is an issue my wife has been complaining about for years. Little does she know its her thats out of sync.
Rose Madura They also said mine has nothing to do with the surgery but I'm doubtful.

Claudia, I experienced dizziness, equilibrium problems, and vertigo starting a few months after surgery. It was so troubling and I was also unable to drive. I had a neurologist consult and then an ENT consult. They ruled out BPPV. It was determined that the cause was likely due to a side effect from the Amiodorone which had been prescribed for A fib after surgery resulting in vestibular hypofunction. Research has shown that Amiodorone has been linked to vertigo and vestibular problems. I was referred to avestibular rehabilitation program which definitely has helped.

Hi Claudia. I know how you feel. I suffered from vertigo about 1-2 years after my surgery so I'm not sure if it was related. I understand your frustrations and fearfulness. I, too stopped driving because of not knowing when it would hit. An ENT did diagnos BPPV and performed the Epley maneuver on me which took care of the situation. That was 2 years ago I've read where 94% of vertigo cases are from BPPV. Maybe a second opinion from a different ENT? God bless you. Vertigo is very debilitating.
michael swarzman Hi Claudia - I've had vertigo for several years and am having surgery for an aortic valve replacement on October 11th. I spoke to the surgeon about it, as the anesthesia (coming out) is, obviously, a major concern.
If you aren't successful with your ENT, seeking out information from a balance center is a good option - major academic centers typically have them, and they are multi-disciplinary. I live in Chicago and San Diego - you can guess what time of the year I live where - and am fortunate to have good input from both. If it's not benign, there are still treatment options that may get you to a better place.
Good luck to you, and I'm happy to share the information I have if you'd like. ... Read more
