Dear Barbara you are amazing and an inspiration for me. I am still waiting and seeing the cardio every 6 months, but feel that things about to change for me. Next week is echo and doctor week and the conversation has already been about surgery and AVR and more test. So I feel this time may be test time and then..... possibly surgery. I hope when my time comes that I will be able to do as well as you. Keep us all posted as you progress. God blessings to you and yours.

Hi Barbara, I have my first follow up same day as you, I have lots of questions for doctor. One of the meds has given me lots of discomfort so hoping that can be fixed. My husband Joe will be going back to work after taking 3 weeks off to stay with me, I'm going to miss him so much, but I guess that's part of moving on. Best wishes

Barbara, I've been following your journal for a while because I'm in your age group and also have a seriously stenosed aortic valve. I've been delaying surgery for 18 months because I didn't have symptoms. Now I do have symptoms, so I have an appointment March 7th and I'm expecting to decide on action to correct the problem. What made you decide to go with the mechanical valve? How is it working for you?
I chose the mechanical valve mainly because I did not want to take a chance on having to have another surgery to replace a bovine or porcine valve that had become calcified and stenotic. It seems that the chief disadvantage of the mechanical valves is the need for anticoagulation to prevent clots forming on the valve hinges. I had been on Coumadin for Atrial fibrillation for several months before surgery and it has not been a problem. I am in good health apart from my cardiac problems and hope to be around for 20 plus years. My valve is a "Top Hat". Another thing that people complain of with the mechanical valves is being able to hear a clicking noise. I have a thin chest wall and thought that I might be able to hear mine click, but I can't hear a thing.

Be careful out there. The hospitals and doctors offices typically have masks that have elastic to fit over your ears. I got the stomach flu somewhere my third week home. Had to reschedule my follow up visit with the surgeon. Having the stomach flu was not fun. If you have p go out and be around groups, use a mask and use hand sanitizer after touching stuff in public.

Barbara, as another cat person I understand your concern about the bread making in the sternum area. I had a cat named "Chester". He earned his name by making bread on the chest. He is gone on to cat heaven and my current cat (Frances) likes to do the same, but is also a great lap cat. Glad to hear you are doing great. Keep up the good work.
